DBT |
DBT was developed to help with emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, and often self-harming and suicidal behaviors. In adolescent DBT parents and teens take an active role in learning skills and tracking behaviours that can help to move away from self-destructive behaviours. There are a number of skills in DBT stills training including Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotional Regulation and Distress Tolerance. The goal of DBT is to teach adolescents techniques to help them understand their emotions without judgment.

As in adult trauma treatment Somatic Experiencing (SE) is the approach that I use. SE is a trauma treatment that uses the nervous system as an important tool to integrate difficult and stressful experiences. In SE we work towards holistic balance in the system and hold a deep and profound belief in our natural healing abilities. I hold the space and create a safe container for us to do this in. I often encourage parents to actively participate in creating this container and learning about their children's nervous system.
